Are Your Electric Bills in Massachusetts High? Here’s How to Lower Them

You’re not reading it wrong: your electricity bill really is that much. In Massachusetts, electricity rates (21.11 cents/ kwh) are among some of the highest in the nation. Energy burdens per household here (the percentage of a household’s income amount spent on energy) are over 20 percent. Imported fossil fuels, inflation, and climate change are all to blame.

If you’re looking for ways to reduce your electricity bill, good news: as of February 2025, the Department of Public Utilities has approved a $500 million cut to Mass Save in order to lower utility bills. Until the ruling reflects on your bill, we’ve compiled a guide on how to save a few bucks on your electricity.

Save Some Money & Ditch the Dishwasher

According to Schneider Electric, the average dishwasher uses up to 1,800 watts of electricity per cycle, which is around 1.8 kilowatts. To put this into perspective, every time you use your dishwasher, you’re spending about $40 dollars. While cleaning dishes by hand is never fun, it is much cheaper.

Lower Your Bill By Unplugging Some Appliances

Even when you’re not using them, they’re still costing you money. Known as “phantom power,” appliances that are plugged in but not actively in use make up 5-10% of a home’s energy use . Why spend money if you don’t have to? Unplug some appliances today. (We recommend air fryers, coffee machines, and computers. )

Save Time & Money with a Power Strip (If You Don’t Want to Unplug Everything)

By plugging your appliances into a power strip, you can turn all of them off with the switch of a button. Just be careful not to overload the strip with too many cords, as it can catch on fire.

Switch Out Your Lightbulbs For More Savings

LED light bulbs can save you up to $225 per year. If that’s not enough to convince you to switch, they also last longer than incandescent bulbs (the most common type of light bulb), utilize less electricity, and don’t emit UV waves.

Spend Less Overtime By Resealing Your Home

Poor insulation can cause air to escape your home, leading to higher electricity bills. By booking a resealing appointment, your home’s insulation will be able to trap cold and warm air better, bringing down electricity bill costs.
